The Importance of Early Predictors of Airway Disease in At Risk Populations: New Strategies to Combat Asthma and COPD

Martinez FD.

Respiratory Drug Delivery 2018. Volume 1, 2018: 1-6.

Abstract:

Significant new evidence has emerged in the last five years indicating that the two most common chronic respiratory conditions, asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have their roots in early life. For both illnesses, risk factors stretching back to intrauterine life have been described for incident cases during childhood, but also for those in which clinical inception occurs in adult life. This article reviews the recent literature illustrating the importance of fostering normal childhood growth to prevent chronic lung diseases in adulthood.
