Abstract:
Asthma is responsible for significant morbidity that may be reduced by evidence-based, self-management of asthma. Technological innovation is a mode of delivery for many of the strategies that can support people living with asthma. In addition to links to information, technology can provide automated reminders to improve adherence, strategies to promote lifestyle change, facilitation of remote consulting, and mobile applications (apps) for monitoring asthma status. Action plans, which are considered the core components of self-management, are rarely included in currently available apps. The evidence-based components of a taxonomy could usefully inform future technological developments for supporting self-management. Evaluation of effectiveness and safety are required for regulatory approvals, but rapid methodologies are needed to keep apace of technological advances. Technology can support implementation of self-management in clinical practice, but must integrate with existing healthcare systems.
