Abstract:
Innovation in drug delivery is often accompanied by technical obstacles. Overcoming these challenges may require closing knowledge gaps in the relevant science, advancing new ground in established pharmaceutical industry processes or materials, or applying technical solutions from other industries. By doing so, not only might these challenges be overcome, but unanticipated benefits may arise. This paper examines three key challenges encountered during the development of the DosePro® (Zogenix, Inc.) needle-free delivery technology, any one of which would have stymied development and prevented the technology from eventual commercialization. The his- tory of approaches described herein may be useful in the development of other innovative drug delivery systems, including those used for pulmonary and nasal delivery.
