Variation in Hospital Aerosol Delivery Practices: Does it Matter?

Abstract:
Aerosols are delivered in many settings for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Published data regarding aerosol delivery practices in the intensive care unit, the emergency department, the pulmonary function test laboratory and in patients with cystic fibrosis and spontaneously breathing tracheostomized children were reviewed. A significant variation in practice among different institutions and countries was found. The use of some of the reported practices is expected to result in poor aerosol drug delivery. Development of standard of care practices, and proper dissemination of new and existing recommendations arising from consensus guidelines are crucial to optimize inhaled drug delivery.
