Campanini A, Linnane PG, Lafratta A.

Respiratory Drug Delivery 2014. Volume 1, 2014: 249-258.

Abstract:

Many different inhaler products are available for the treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD); however industry has focused solely on pharmacologically based strategies for the treatment of the disease rather than considering the manner in which patients use their inhalers. The active drug is only one aspect of the inhalation product; the inhaler is also a critical component, which ensures accurate administration of the medication. However, inhaler misuse and poor compliance are very common problems for patients using their inhalers. Numerous tools and techniques are available to understand and optimize how people interact with medical devices to meet patient requirements. Adoption of these principles should help to ensure new inhaler devices are intuitive, hazards are mitigated and that instructions for use are easy to understand.
