Abstract:

Hundreds of millions of people suffer from acute and chronic respiratory diseases worldwide. While estimates remain imprecise, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), close to 300 million have asthma, 210 million have COPD, and millions of others have other chronic respiratory diseases. More than 50% of these people live in developing countries where access to respiratory drugs remains extremely low. Pharmaceutical markets in emerging economies are also growing at unprecedented rates as the unserved populations gain access to medicines. This creates opportunities for improving access and achieving growth for pharmaceutical companies with active respiratory drug portfolios. However, improving access to pharmaceuticals and achieving growth remains a challenge in many developing country markets due a variety of factors. This paper highlights some of those challenges and presents ideas for overcoming the bottlenecks.
